Turkey National Team

Turkey locates in Eurasia but it has been settled playing in the Europe zone since the 1954 World Cup where Lefter Kucukandonyadis was their most remarkable star. However, Zeki Riza Sporel was its first superstar as one of the most prolific scorers in amateur era during 1920s. The 1980s saw the Turkish best striker ever Metin Oktay. Hankan Suker was the most iconic Turkish star in the first half 2000s, being chosen as Turkish UEFA Jubilee.   Fatih Terim is the greatest Turkish football personality of all-time and is named in player-manager.

  1. their staffs are great, but do you mind putting together a formation B using the reserves that are among the 22?

    1. I'm appreciated that you like to see the formation B. Actually, Formation B - E was available in my active works during Xtratime.org period but the it was all cancelled as the work reform to identify each all-time squad and eliminate the problem that saw many players in lower Formation is better than the higher one due to inequivalent level of players between positions and was solved by replacement of positional ranking for reserved players.

  2. I understand, but still prefer the way you ~ and fzia in xtratime.org is like my way of doing squads too, when my blog is ready pass you my link, I do not like the desperation of some forums out there that heap squads with 3, 4 center-forwards and only five or six defenders only to include all stars on the same team

All-stars team XI D1 Turkey "Süper Lig" (1959-2012). Turkish newspaper "Hürriyet" (vote among football specialists): 4-4-2

what about Hamburger SV Goalkeeper Ozcan?

    1. I'm surprised that there was a Turkish keeper regularly appear in Bundesliga in the late 1960s to early 1970s. Kicker start to rate foreigner since 1971 and he was not rated better than national level. Note that Hamburg in his time was middle-level team in Bundesliga. He also got a few opportunities to play for Turkey. He might be better than Seren in quality but status in history is way disqualified.

Thanks for reply. Then, how about Segnol Gunes in Minor Reserved Group? He was a great manager and also as a Goalie. Gunes was an important player for Trabzonspor which dominated Turkish football during 70s to 80s.

  6. Now the all-time Turkey XI has been reformed with alternation of 4 midfielders. In substitution, Haki Yeten and Tuncay Sanli replace Oguz Cetin and Mandiralri who has been removed.

How about Segnol Gunes in 'Major Reserved Player'? He is a great manager and also was as a great Goalie. Gunes was an important player for Trabzonspor which dominated Turkish football during 70s to 80s(6 Times Turkish Super League Winner). Also he awarded 'Turkish Footballer of the year' in 1979. Trabzonspor's ground, 'Segnol Gunes Stadium' is named after him.

  8. I see he is more reputable as manager than player. As compared with Terim, he is clearly inferior in club level so I think there is no space for him.

  9. In the book: Fiorentina from A to Z they compare Can Bartu and Lefter while at Fiorentina, suggesting Bartu was "something else" comparing to Lefter, that he was a genius who did not commit in the game, and Lefter was mediocre. In another book about Fiorentina they also suggest Lefter was not made for the highest level of football (regarding to his experiences in Fiorentina and Nice).
I see he has an outstanding record regarding Turkish football, but I was wondering if he is maybe a little overrated.

I'm thinking for example about Emre, who is low rated here, but has proven himself in Italy leaving a good memory in Inter fans.

Not saying that Lefter is overrated, just wondering about how much abroad carreer should be an influence in evaluating a player in the 50s.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Ok, here instead they say Lefter was beloved by the Fiorentina supporter and they depict him as a tricky, skilled left winger. I don't know which Fiorentina website is right! I would agree he is probably not overrated.

    1. I never know that lefter was a left-winger during his career at Fiorentina. I have the same idea as you. He failed to make score enough in Series A where is seemingly difficult for himself. Can Bartu is even more successful as he survived in the league for many seasons. Now I think Bartu is advantageous. About Emre, I check in media average seasonal rating and he was really rated in low range for all seasons.

Turkey's best player ever was Sergen Yalçın.

"I have never seen a talent like his in my entire career. The Turkish nation are not aware of the type of player they possess."-Safet Sušić

"He is the Turkish Zidane."-Franz Beckenbauer

"His ball movement and dribbling drives his opponents crazy. If Zidane and Figo were to ever play against him even they would just stare and watch him in awe."-André Villas-Boas

"In my 40 year career I have never seen another talent like his. If only he had come in to my hands as a youngster. Perhaps he’d be sitting in Zidane’s place and go down in history as one of the all-time greats. It is such a pity, I feel so sorry for him."-Mircea Lucescu

"He is an extraordinary footballer. Even in his current state he would easily play at Real Madrid."-Vicente del Bosque

"Sergen is one of the best footballers in the world. I still haven’t forgotten that night he bamboozled me at the Olympiastadion."-Lothar Matthäus

"I don’t have his football brain. Not even Platini does."-Jean Tigana

"He’s in the same class as Maradona. If Turkish football had its current level of standards and opportunity during his formative years things would’ve turned out much different for him."-Óscar Córdoba

"Sergen is the best footballer I’ve ever seen. He would’ve been a world icon had he played in the Serie A."-Federico Giunti

"If Sergen took football even just a little bit seriously he would have become the world’s best player."-Joachim Löw

"Sergen was amazing. God gave him many gifts. I think we resembled each other as players, he saw everything that happened around him so easily and so quickly and he reacted in the same manner. For me, he is Turkey’s greatest ever footballer. Which of us had the better left foot? It wouldn't be right to make such a comparison because we were both great players. We let our feet do the talking."-Gheorghe Hagi

"No-one in the world had Sergen’s talent but he just needed discipline. I used to tell him, ‘you can even surpass Baggio, please work hard and give respect to your profession’. But he only ever saw football as a hobby. He just preferred to live his own life."-Christoph Daum

"He was just something else, a player who could play in any team in the world. I’ve worked with the likes of Hagi and Ronaldo (Brazilian) but I’ve never seen anyone as good as Sergen. I will never forget him."-Mircea Lucescu

"I’ve always looked at him in disappointment. This kind of wonderful footballer, one of the greatest to ever play the game, needed to do and achieve more. Just think about it. With what little he achieved he has left all of us in awe. If he had been pushed in the right direction he would’ve gone on to achieve great things."-Fatih Terim

Ercan Aktuna, one of the best Turkish defenders, strong and tall commanding the back line with power, proper right timed interventions and he was excellent in aerial play. Because of the similarity of his style of play to that of Cesare Maldini , he was named to his active Maldini Ercan.

Could you explain why did you decided not include Nihat in the best squad?

    Also how about sukru gulesin?

  18. You still have Arda as your best Turkish player ever, and Hakan Çalhanoglu in minor reserved group. In my opinion, his career is already better than Arda's. He was good at Leverkusen, good in Milan and outstanding these last years for Inter.

  19. I believe Hakan Çalhanoglu could claim to be the best Turkish footballer of all time. He was already deserving of a spot in the reserves during his time at Milan, but as a deep lying playmaker in Inter he has been consistently the best in the league. If you have Emre and Bastürk in the first squad, he should definetly be there in my opinion.
