Greece has
produced few world-class players and has developed since the second half of the
20th century. Mimis Domazos, who led Panathnaikos to the European Cup
finalist and Giorgos Sideris are its first international-class stars in the
1960s. Vassilis Hatzipanagis, who won Greece UEFA Jubilee awards, played for
them just a game because FIFA didn’t allow him to do more due to his appearance
in USSR U-21. The 2000s saw a high increment of Greek player’s quality and gradually
export to play in top European leagues such as Georgatos, Dellas, Karagounis,
etc. The manager is exceptionally selected, Otto Rehagel is one of the only two
foreign managers in this series as he became the greatest personality in
history of Greece football.

Explanation of Formation
The team strategy is
ultra-defensive counter-attack. Sarganis is selected as the best Greek keeper ever.
Georgatos is assigned as a left-wing-back, would extremely speed to the
left-wing area. Apostolakis stands a right full-back, S.Manolas has a role of
sweeper juts behind the first wall K.Manolas who is his nephew. In midfield line, Zakorakis who won
EURO 2004 player of the tournament would act as a destroyer as well as directing
central midfield area. Hatzipanakis would take semi-left-side attacking position
to get advanced by his dribbling while Koudas would get the same task on the
right. Domazos is a heart of the creativity of the team. The front-line has no
target striker, forwards like Mavros and Sideris are a du-o coordinator and
would take withdrawn to deeper position under the defensive tactic.

I'm amazed. How come you find all of these rare evidences ? I guess you're a historical collector ?
DeleteI have historic university education. Football history is my hobby. I liked your site. So I decided to help you with information.
DeleteNikopolidids- he won the UEFA EURO 2004 being an integral part
ReplyDeleteNikopolidis a sub?
ReplyDeleteAnthimos Kapsis?
ReplyDeleteHe won only 35 caps or do you have any support info about him ?
DeleteI think he is better than Konstantinos Iosifidis(although their positions are different, but both of them are DF). According to above source(All-stars team D1 Greece by decade, anonymous posted), Kapsis was named in 1970s best xi with Iosifidis. By the way, Kapsis's achievements are more decorated. and he was selected in 'Europe XI' squad against 'South American XI'.
DeleteInteresting but I need to know why he won only 35 caps.
DeleteAt that times (70s and early 80s) there were not too many international games, plus our team only once qualified for a major competition (Euro 80). So, 35 caps was not considered such little number under those circumstances.
DeleteKostas Katsouranis was probably the highest quality midfielder of the 2000-2014 era. Even if the last 3-4 years of his career his explosiveness was gone, his game understanding, versatility and goal scoring capacities were of way higher level than most other players praised here.

I Think you should add Nestoridis and Rosidis.
I think you should add Kostas Eleftherakis
ReplyDeleteAs a Roma fan, there is no comparison between Traianos Dellas and Kostas Manolas. I saw both play. Dellas was a backup, physically good but too slow and did not make any impact on the team, while Manolas is the heart of our defense. He makes concentration mistakes, but is incredibly fast and effective with his tackles. I understand Dellas is a legend for the National team because of 2004 Euro, but that doesn't prove he is better than Manolas or Sokratis. Also K. Manolas has disputed a really good 2014 World Cup.
ReplyDeleteYour perspective is matched with rating in DBScalcio. Dellas was never rated higher than 6.00 in seasonal average while Manolas get above 6.00 in all four seasons. As you said, Dellas is legend for Greece, it is difficult to take him out now. I'd prefer wait more seasons for Manolas to endure if he should be added.
DeleteManolas is not consistent, but I think that he is already a top 5 Greek defender of all time. He performed well in the Champions League, World Cup and Serie A. I'm sure he will be worth of a spot in the squad. Does your rating evidence suggest Dellas should be better than Sokratis?
DeleteDellas is favored for his prominent defensive role with the Greek team that won 2004 Euro Winner. I've not make a calculation for players in small nation like Greece. However, Sokaris and Kostas should have surpassed him if calculated since they are much better than him in club level. I think I might reshuffle them. Let me check all related info.
DeleteI think that Kostas Manolas can be mencionated;
ReplyDeleteHe was named to the Serie A Best XI and was nominated to Team of the Year by UEFA all due of 2017/2018 season.
I'd prefer wait for his performance until the end of this season.
Deletemaybe you should reconsider Kostas Manolas.. way too soon to be included in the first 11.. he doesn't perform quite convincing lately.. current manager has dropped him off the squad along Sokratis (although I disagree with this choice)..
ReplyDeleteWell, I have been following his performance. I'm not sure if he has surpassed the likes of Kalitzakis and Dabisaz.
Deletewhy you have him as a starter then? :P
DeleteHe is rated impressively in Series A, His domestic career is better than others although his contribution to Greece is average.
DeleteY can change best Greek player. Xatzipanagis. Y also write it. Domazos best pao player but Xatzipanagis best Greek league player ever.
ReplyDeleteOk I see. Let revise.
DeleteHi,
ReplyDeleteI think you could add Akis Zikos which was a player of Monaco in the first half of the 2000s, almost always in the XI. He reached the Champions League Final with Monaco in 2004. For sure one of the best greek of these years. What a pity Rehaggel didn't like him and broke his international career. He should have been in the greek XI which won the Euro.
