Karl-Heiz Rummenigge became the best European player in first half 1980s played alongside World-class players like Paul Brietner and Toni Schumaccher. In 1990, the Germany was re-unified with its most prominent player Lothar Matthaus who is regarded as the greatest central midfielder of all-time. A short time after reunification, Matthias Sammer from eastern part of Germant made a phenomenon performance as a libero in the mid-1990s. The Oliver Kahn and Manuel Nauer were the best goalkeeper in the World in early 2000s and first half 2010s, respectively and both are the best German keeper ever. Note that East German players are also combined in this squad.

Formation XI (4-1-3-2)

Explanation of Formation

Neuer is selected as first choice instead of Kahn due to his better status for Germany. Schnellinger is on the left and Berti Vogts is on the right, the defensive game in the side of the field would be unbeatable. Both full-back sometimes press themselves to the central defense area when Beckenbauer move to support attacking game. Kohler beat Forster as a starter-marker just for his better performance in World Cup. Overath is left-midfielder who uncompromisingly approach. Rahn is on right-wing and is assigned to cut inside to support goalscoring. Matthaus would dynamically move across function in midfield line. Fritz Walter performs as an advanced playmaker to support the front-line. Rummenigge is a side forward who move between left-wing and central area. Gerd Muller has the extreme high potential to make a large number of scores unimaginably.

  2. Libuda think is very underrated in your country, I speak German I that something else for you, but all games I saw was more than Libuda Grabowski, and others held their list

    1. In primary rating reference by kicker, Libuda is rated below Sigfried Held but just as good as Holzenbein. I just get into deeper details, Libuda seems to be the most talent player in this group, known for his exceptional dribbling but also his scoring record is just much below average in winger standard. Libuda won just 26 caps, much lower than the two and as I check he was few capped just because of his inconsistency profile. In 1966 FIFA World Cup, he was at age of 23 and was not selected for the final squad (he won first caps at only 20 years old), just lost his place to Lothar Emmerich who just play for West Germany for one game. Do you have more support info about him ?

  3. good reference that I have been games I saw all these players you listed and that to me is essential, but in the international campaign was Held title see play as striker yourself.

    1. Yes but as long as these players are ranked by performance and I admit I cannot watch most of games in 90 minutes through their career, I have to depend on information for now but I've long attempted to watch more. Anyway, If players are rated by only skill, watching of sampling games likes your suggestion could be OK.

  7. Did not understand the ausênsia Otto Harder, played 1914-1926 15 games and 14 goals, much better than many strikers placed. His football fame in Germany was comparable with Uwe Seeler's fame.

    1. Thanks for this name. I admit to have never heard of him. As I check by reading two articles. He was accolade for his complete ability and was one of the most talented German players alongside Richard Hoffmann prior to the golden era of Kuzorra and Szepan but his physical body condition was always a problem, played just 50 – 60 minutes per match and unfortunately Germany did not enter to any international matches between 1915 and 1919 (enter only one game in 1914) due to World War I. He returned to play for his nation in 1920 but he scored no goal in first three games whereas the team scored four goals totally. Then, he is conjectured to be punished by ignorance to be called for the caps in following three years (missed all games in 1921 and 1922 and participated only one game in 1923). Harder with his 31 years old was just share a high proportion of the eleven starter in 1924 until 1926 (however still missed four games).
For me, he could be named in the bottom list but I’d prefer not create his profile.

Harder was a supporter of the Hitler regime, so his name got forgotten in Germany, i'm not sure if he should be included due to his personality even if he was a very good striker obviously

      Delete
    3. I ever read article of Harder and I remember I'd not include him due to his very short prime.

    4. After all, the site is Performance or personality?

      Delete
    5. Performance as the majority and personality in the meaning of greatness impact history is a the minority.

      Delete
    6. I think you should focus on talent and performance, how to think or act outside the field should not tell. While defending the Nazi regime, Harder was one of the greatest strikers of his his time, no one knows the influence that received at the time.

im pretty sure Klose was a way better striker than Bierhoff, you should change this

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Bierhoff is better in control the ball by feet and a better foot shorter but Klose is quicker. I watch Bierhoff in his Udinese years and I'm much more impressive on him than Klose. In performance, they have a similar number of seasons. So the peak is preference to Bierhoff.

I think that thomas Müller deserves more than Prince silver, don't you think so?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I don't think so since he is now only 25 years old and has collected 1.5 world-class and 4 international-class seasons by kicker. Prince Gold required the profile at least 1 - 2 world-class with 6 - 8 international-class seasons.

  10. Where is TIMO KONIEZTKA? He was prolific german striker ever!!!

    1. He was rated by kicker in ony 3 international-class seasons. The selective standard of this musuem is at least 5 international-class seasons.

    1. Lothar Emmerich is surely not qualified. He won only 5 caps and was rated by kicker in only 1 international-class season. He might be achieve a few more seasons in aboard but still by far nou enough. Kelbassa also achieved only 2 international-class seasons.

Finally, Siegfried Held is well-matched with 8 international-class seasons and won 41 caps but kicker seems to overrate him. His best rank in German player of the year is at 7th in 1966 and other than that just below 10th.

  23. As I check Kicker's ratings, I see that Hummels has collected 1 world class season and 4 international class-seasons, while Boateng has 1,5 world class and 2 international class. Shouldn't both of them be ahead of Ditmar Jakobs who only has 3,5 international class seasons, less caps, less influence and has not even won the World Cup?. And I think Hummels (maybe not Boateng) should also be ahead of Erhardt, who has 6,5 international class but no world class seasons.

Have a nice day and keep on going! I see you're always improving.

    2. Kicker does not report the number of seasons, but the number of times nominated. Every nomination = half season. So Jakobs was chosen 7 times international-class, this means 3,5 seasons. Hummels was chosen for 8 times international-class, so 4 seasons.

    Dear Naratorn,
as a follower and fan of the German team since the late 1960's (born in 1960) I saw many matches on national and international level. From your Table of Positional Ranking I would propose the following changes:
    Goalkeepers:
Illgner (13) and Lehmann (14) on top of Herkenrath (11) and Stein (12).
Illgner was the GK of German WC-Winning-Team in 1990 and had many top level appearances with Cologne and later on with Real Madrid.
Lehmann was an outstanding GK during a decade, Germanys first choice during the tournaments in WC 2006 and EC 2008. He played on very high level with Schalke, Dortmund and Arsenal and only had bad luck that Kahn was regarded as Germanys No. 1 from 1998 to 2005.
    Defensive lateral:
It’s common opinion that Lahm is the best right or left back of all time in Germany. By far better than Vogts and Schnellinger.
Former GDR-Player Konrad Weise (15) was a pure Central Defender and in East German National Team he played as a stopper with sweeper Dixie Dörner.
No way to let out Thomas Berthold from this list. 3x in Geman WC-squad, WC-winner in 1990, he should definetely appear in this ranking.
Another, not very spectacular, but solid right back and stopper was Arne Friedrich, member of the 2006 and 2010 WC-squads and a regular starter for nearly a decade. I would propose to include him too. (to be continued) ...

    ReplyDelete
  28. Anonymous4/5/18

    Sweeper:
Christian Wörns (11) did not fulfill the role of a sweeper. He was a Jürgen-Kohler-type of central defender (stopper).
Gerd Kische (12) was a very fast right back of East German team of th 1970 but never a sweeper.
I would include Bernd Cullmann in this list, he played as a sweeper or in defensive midfield for Cologne and Germany (40 caps).
    Stopper:
I guess you only forgot Per Mertesacker? His playing style was not very elegant because of his height, but he was very good in ball passing and he had a brilliant anticipation. Member of three German WC-squads (2006,2010, 2014) and WC-winner in Brazil.
Another highly regarded player was a member of the 1954 team, which beat Hungary team in the WC-final: Josef (“Jupp”) Posipal. During the WC tournament he played as a full back, but his normal position was center back. He even played in an European selection in 1953 against England.
    Defensive Midfielder:
There are very different type of players in this list. Normally it should be divided into DM and box-to-box-midfielder (No. 6 and No. 8). For me, Schweinsteiger is at the same level than Ballack, should be among the top 3.
It’s always difficult to find a position for players, who still play as a pro. But if you include Özil, Kroos and Müller, there’s no way to let out Sami Khedira. Even he would finish his career tomorrow, he should already be among the top 5.
    (to be continued)

    ReplyDelete
  29. Anonymous4/5/18

    Offensive Midfielder:
I would classify Toni Kroos as a Defensive Midfielder (No. 8). He had the offensive part in the beginning of his career but nowadays with Germany and Real Madrid his role is not directly behind the attacking line.
I would include Hans (“Hansi”) Müller. In the late 70s and beginning 80s he was a Brazilian type of player, unusual for a German at that time.
    Offensive lateral:
There are several very highly regarded winger you did not mention in your list.
First of all, Lukas Podolski can not be let out. 49 goals for Germany, 3 times member of a WC-squad and regular starter in 2006 and 2010, he had a lot of impressive appearances in the German shirt.
I also propose to take Bernd Schneider and Oliver Neuville in your list. Both 2002 WC-runners up and member of the 2006 squad.
The best left winger of the area before 1945 was Stanislaus Kobierski, member of th 1934 WC-squad.
I guess, the name under No. 13 (“Adolf Lehner”) should be: Adolf Urban? (left winger of Schalke 04).
One of the always underrated players is Albert Brülls, member of the 1962 and 1966 WC-squads. He had a brilliant technique, but never played with big clubs in Germany or Italy (Modena, Brescia). But he surely is one of the top 20 Geman winger.
Not to forget two East German winger: Andreas Thom and Thomas Doll. They both had great appearances with their national team in the late 1980s. Later on, they did not find a regular place in the common German team of the 1990s, but because of their club appearances and their honours for the East German team, they should also be in this list.
    (to be continued)

  30. Anonymous4/5/18

    Forward:
Dieter Müller (9) was nothing but a Gerd-Müller-type striker, a No. 9. He should be classified in the striker-list. A formidable goalscorer in Bundesliga, but he only had big days in national team during the EC of 1976. Later on, German manager Helmut Schön preferred Klaus Fischer or Horst Hrubesch.
Jupp Heynkes was a tremendous player in all position of the attacking line. I would classify him as a winger because of his appearances for Germany between 1971 and 1976 on the right or left side.
You will be surprised, if I propose Helmut Schön to be included in the list, but as a player, he was a highly talented ball passer and goalscorer in the late 1930s and beginning 1940s together with German young star Fritz Walter. He also did very well with his club Dresden alongside with legend Richard Hofmann.
    Striker:
As far as I know, famous Richard Hofmann was a second striker, as for example young Fritz Walter. He usually played behind a No. 9 striker. He was one of the German world class players before 1945.
The one, I would definitely include in this list, is Karl-Heinz Riedle. On club level, he had top appearances with Bremen, Lazio and Dortmund. In Geman team he often was second choice behind Völler and Klinsmann, but was a gread goalscorer anyway.
That’s what I want to propose for your German list.
Thank’s very much for your detailed work that I loved tor study.

Aside from that, other sources such as Bundesliga team of the season and ranking in German footballer of the year are taken into account. Hi, Naratorn,
o.k., but you should at least change the position of Konrad Weise, Gerd Kische, Christian Wörns and Dieter Müller, because I am shure about their positions in the field.
About Richard Hofmann, he played as a second striker or inside left (German: "linker Halbstürmer"). Eye-witnesses of his matches declared him to be one of the best players they have ever seen (Helmut Schön). His best match for Germany was against England professional team, when he marked 3x while the match ended with a draw (3-3). German Football Association (DFB) suspended him from national team in 1933 for cigarette advertisment. Without that suspension, he would have been part of the 1934 world cup team in Italy and of the famous "Breslau XI" in 1937. Becaus of that suspension he did not belong to bothe of thea teams, as you mentioned wrongly in your first sentences about the German team at the top.
    Greetings, Uwe

    2. Yes, I am aware that the ratings are for half a season. He was plagued by injuries, but he is one of the best German players of the entire decade - he also won 2 German Footballer of the Year, and the star player for Dortmund in the last 7-8 years (together with Hummels and Aubameyang). He would have been World Champion in 2014 if not for an injury.

Let's compare him with 3 players on your list: Libuda, Basler and Löhr.

Reus: 2 times German Footballer of the Year (2012,19)
2 times WC, 8 times INT-Class, 7 times broad circle.

Libuda: 0 times German footballer of the year
      4 times INT-Class, 11 times broad circle

Löhr: 0 times German footballer of the year
      5 times Int-Class, 8 times broad circle

Basler: 0 times German footballer of the year
      4 times Int-Class, 6 times broad circle

In addiction to having WAY better rankings in Kicker than all these players, as you can easily see online, Reus is equal or superior in talent than Libuda and Basler, but more consistent than both of them, and better technically than Löhr. He also has better international stats than Libuda and Basler, and similar to Löhr.

Reus has not only had better performances throughout his (still short) carreer, but has also a better status than all these players ever had.

There is no way, in my opinion, that he should not feature here and that he is not placed at least on par with Adolf Urban. He has similar kicker stats to Sigfried Held and is still only 31.

I hope you will reconsider based on these arguments. Let me know!

Neuer now has 2 Champions leageu titles.. the fact that you rate buffon as king silver and Neuer only as QG is disturbing.. they are not THAT far apart surely?? Neuer has been more successful with his national team than Buffon has.. Neuer got more silver and bronze medals than Buffon. For sure Neuer deserves an upgrade?

I think you are missing Fritz Walters brother Ottmar Walter. They played together in Kaiserslautern and the German national team. He was outshined by Fritz, but still he got 336 goals in 321 games for Kaiserslautern whilst playing alongside his brother. That is insane in on its own. He is in my opinion one of the most underrated strikers of all time. He also got 10 goals in 21 games for Germany, but that is a little misleading since he got subbed in very late in the game usually. He didn't play 21 full games for them. He scored 4 goals in the 1954 world cup win. He was top scorer of the league three times, while Fritz only managed to do that twice.

I hope you will consider adding him, as I see you have waaaay more players scattered everywhere with less merit than Ottmar. He deserves queen rating at least if you ask me. Surely it's a mistake that he's not here? Easily deserve it in front of Miroslav Klose as well. His stats are unreal, even for his time.

I am curious about the class of precocious talents who went unfulfilled like Mario Goetze. What would be Mario Goetze's class if he could be ranked? Prince Bronze? Princess gold?

Why are Toni Kroos and Andreas Moller both ranked at the fifth place in the positional ranking list? Is it a typo or are they actually supposed to be equally ranked?

Why is Mats Hummels inot included right after Wolfgang Weber in the substitution list for central defenders? You have included him in the positional ranking at the end. I find the class of Kuzorra and Szepan to be way too high in light of their performance evaluation score in the main hall of fame. Is it because of their great quality that they did not get the opportunity to show fully for the national team because of war disruptions and a bad relationship with the national coach ?

I believe the likes of Lahm, Ballack, T.Muller and Kroos maybe deserve a mention in the introduction as they are the best outfield german players of the last 20 years or so and Lahm, Muller and Kroos also won the world cup. Based on their positional hall of fame scores they are not on the same caliber as the best outfield german players of previous generations but Kahm and Neuer did not carry the German Nt on their own with no support and Kroos and Muller could gain more points as they are still active. Ballack's case is that he was for a few years also the German NT's only world class outfield player.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Anonymous18/9/21

Why is Lahm in queen bronze class while Ballack,T.Muller and Kroos are in prince gold class despite having similar positional hall of fame scores? Because Lahm has done more for the national team? Lahm scores higher in international country but Ballack was in the team of the tournament several times for both the world cup and the Euros and T.Muller and Kroos have had bad moments with the Germany Nt but they won the world cup as key players being more important than Lahm in that occasion.

  68. Anonymous18/9/21

Reviewing the positional hall of fame Ballack is the highest rated of the four in international country, higher than even Lahm and yet he is in prince gold class. Is it because he does not have enough qualified seasons according to Kicker?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Anonymous22/10/21

Why is Haesler only in prince gold class? He is one of the best offensive laterals in the main hall of fame .

Why is Walter ahead of Rummenigge in the positional ranking even though Rummenigge is ranked higher in the positional hall of fame ? Greater contribution to the German National team?

    ReplyDelete
  71. Anonymous25/12/21

I personally think Ballack, Muller and Kroos should be all in Queen Bronze class like Lahm or at least T.Muller and Kroos looking at their progressive performance in Kicker. Haesler as well because of his positional hall of fame rating.

  72. Anonymous27/1/22

Kroos and T.Muller's performances for Germany in major tournaments after 2014 are regrettable and Muller was especially below par but i believe there is a good case for ranking them up.
Kroos has helped Real Madrid to win three UCLs in a row and Muller has helped Bayern Munich to win a sextuple. Real Madrid had Ronaldo and they were a team filled with superstars but it has to be noticed that they reached the UCL's semifinals last season after Ronaldo left with Kroos as a starter.
Muller has a been a key cog to a Bayern Munich team that lost a single UCL game since 2020. Robert Lewandowski's individual brilliance certainly comes first but it does not account for Bayern Munich's whole performance and they have benefitted from T.Muller returning to the starting line-up.

  73. Anonymous29/3/22

In opinion having followed his career T.Muller was generally a very overrated footballer from 2013 to 2016 but he is also highly underrated for his absolute level after 2019. From 2013 to 2016 he was an excellent player with some big moments but not one of very best in the world.
Last season the media were overrating him because he was pleasing to watch but he was in reality struggling to reach his best form. However in my opinion his performance for most of the 2019-2020 season is completely underrated by the media and more befitting of an AA minus rating than of an A plus rating on the positional hall of fame.
I think that as this season progresses it will become clear that he is not a declining footballer.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Anonymous31/3/22

Imo T.Muller is a player whose career trajectory is completely misunderstood thus leading him to be underrated or overrated at different points of his career. He definitely used to be overrated in general as player from 2013 to 2016 but he has also often been patronized by the media and his peers. For example i am convinced that some of the Ballon D'Or voters overrated his performances so much in 2013 and 2015 because they mistakenly thought that talent wise he was a limited try-hard who did not enough recognition for his performances in high-pressure situations.
He is actually an extremely talented player whose career has been hindered by consistency and self-confidence issues. Most notably he has a penchant for often crumbling emotionally as soon as he feels he is supposed to "carry" a team on his own and he does not feel comfortable with a manager or national team coach.
I am writing this for you to consider because i believe that by the end of the season it could become clear that his career trajectory has been misjudged and that he needs a revision. Time will tell but i believe that he will prove to not be a player on the decline by the end of the 2021-2022 season.

  75. Anonymous31/3/22

Sorry but Marco Reus is overrated on there, he should be regarded on the same light as Mario Gomez. He is obviously a far superior player but his career is overrated.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Anonymous1/4/22

So i hope you will take more into account T.Muller's Kicker ratings if Bayern Munich and Germany manage to win some major international titles in the near future with him playing an important role.
He is a player whose career might be become underrated when he retires because he used to be overrated when he was supposedly in his prime and his career is marred by inconsistency and underperformance in high-pressure situations whenever there is an expectation on him that he has to be the ouright star player.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Anonymous8/4/22

Reus is perhaps not an overrated footballer but i believe some german wingers or forwards who are not ranked here like Serge Gnabry have not received a lot of recognition after seasons that were not any worse that Reus at his prime.
I think Gnabry is a player that should be considered for this list and the positional ranking list, he has been undervalued looking at his consistent goalscoring record in the Bundesliga and and at his performances in the UCL in the 2019-2020 season.
I find it scarcely believable that he was ranked as only international class by Kicker in 2020.

I think that after this season both Kroos and T.Muller should be in queen bronze class. Kroos at the very least since he won the UCl, the league and the domestic cup as a key player. T.Muller also has a case, he has good stats in the UCL and won the league.
