France National Team

The first group  of French stars in amateur era started in the 1910s when Red Star Paris delivered players like goalkeeper Pierre Chayigues and defender Lucien Gamblin. Upon World War I, Jules Dewaquez and Rene Petit were the prominent stars from France in 1920s. Rene Petit was the best French player in the pre-war era and was one of the best playmakers in the world at that time but played for his nation only 2 games because he moved to play in Spain in entire career. France in 1930s saw the team participated for all 3 World Cup final tournaments. Etienne Mattler was a remarkable defender who played in all tournaments. In the post-war era, Larbi Benbarek was moved from Morocco and was the first African superstar played for France.

The true French legends appeared in the second half 1950s when Just Fontaine, Raymond Kopa, Roger Piantoni  and Robert Jonquet, formed the recognizable team that achieved third place in the 1958 World Cup. However, French football was tremendously dropped between the 1960s and mid-1970s. In the 1980s, the magic square which consists of Michel Platini, Jean Tigana and Alain Giresse formed team as one of the best teams in Europe in that era. In early 1990s, France had many superstars like David Ginola, Eric Cantona and Jean Pierre Papin but failed to disqualify for 1994 World Cup.

The Golden Era of French Football : Between the late 1990s and the early 2000s,  France reinforced its defensive quality by group of 4 world-class defenders in which is regarded as the best international country defensive line ever and led by a superstar likes Zinedine Zidane and won its first ever World Cup title. Thierry Henry and Franck Ribery was a key French player in the mid-2000s and early 2010s, respectively. In second half 2010s, France's achievement was led by stars like Antoine Grizemann , Kilian Mpappe, Paul Pogba and N' Golo Kante. Within its history, France has imported many African primitive race to convert the nationality. Raymond Kopa and Michel Platini are two French players to have won Ballon'Dor awards.

Formation XI (4-1-3-2)

Explanation of Formation

Barthez is chosen as a first choice keeper as he is always great in the final international tournament. Three defenders from the glory 1998 - 2000 squad are a main part of the back-line. Amoros on the left-side is assigned to go forward more often than Thuram. As Blanc would perform his role as an offensive sweeper, Thuram need to move inside to represent as the central defender when Blanc could not go down in time. The applied magic square strategy is applied to the midfield line. However, Zidane and Kopa act as a semi-winger and move to the side area occasionally. Platini would go advance to support the front-line. Henry also sometimes move to the left-wing in the time of counter-attack and would support Just Fontaine who is an important opportunistic finisher of the team.

    1. Thanks for helping to find the mistake point. The Revision is needed.

    2. No, that's incorrect. Bosquier played CB or LH and that's it. Then, you may find a couple of games where he played RB, why not.
By the way, one can tell Mr Anonymous is not a reliable source since he says "Giresse played sometimes as AM". Well, Giresse always did.

The formation should be changed to 4-2-3-1 with Ribery replaces Fontaine

    1. I know Ribery is a better performer in overall career and NT career although Fontaine acheived the higher peak in major tournament. To apply 4-2-3-1, Platini would be second striker and Ribery is on the left, Kopa is on the right and Zidane would be taken in deeper area. It is generally very OK. But still, the formation's equivalence would be lowered. There is no natural semi-forward within five midfielders and the potential productivity would become much less.

What? Ribery best player/career than Tigana, Papin, Giresse, Desailly, Fontaine or Cantona???
My god! Ribery has the same level than Pires, impossible to rank him higher top 15

    1. Ribery was one of the best players in Europe in 2008 and 2013. He has a very strong profile of domestic and international club career. Fontaine and Cantona's prime performance is very short. Papin was injury too early and his longevity is a problem. This ranking is applied from the scorecard in positional hall of fame http://xtraimmortal.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-evaluated-scorecards.html

Your work is awesome, i have a big respect for you, and i'm agree with 95% of this page.

But i'm french and i assure you, nobody serious french specialist would put Ribery in top 10 french history.

Ok he did some good things with Bayern since 2008, but in a great collective with lot of major players (Lahm, Robben, Muller, Schweinsteiger...)

When he tooks the succession of Zidane in national team, he was supposed to be the leader and it was clearly a failure. 2008-2012 was an horrible period for France NT.

The best result of France NT since Zidane's retirement is 2014 world cup... without Ribery.

Cantona is a legend in Manchester (much more than Ribery in Munich), Papin a "Ballon d'or", Fontaine is the record holder for most goals scored in a single World cup and a great striker of Reims (one of best european team in 50'), Giresse and Tigana were artist and member of great "carré magique", Desailly is double C1 winner and world champion...

It's clearly impossible to put Ribery in top 10 France history.

      Delete
    3. If rate player just based on NT performance, Ribery is clearly not top 10 and that's why his legend status as a french is way lower rated. I have never been impressed his playing for France but his club career is largely outstanding by his individual contribution although he was surrounded by high level of teammates, is not deduction of his points as there are many players in history could not adjust themselves in the rich-stars team and he was even best player of Bayern in the related two seasons.

Also, The fact that Ribery born to play for France in it failure era, is influenced by the bad condition of the team, is extremely a impeded factor to him.

All in all, I rate them based on all competitions combined. Cantona's reputable legend status is bigger than Ribery because he was a key player to turn history of Man Utd not means he performed better in related season. In some way, it can be called as an accidental greatness when he moved to Man Utd in a suitable time.

Papin's peak could be better than Ribery but as mentioned, the main obstacle of him is injury and lead to disadvantage of longevity.

Giresse and Tigana, both are one of the best players in Europe in onkly one year according to Ballon'Dor ranking. Particularly, Tigana won French player of the year only once time.

Desially's style of play is too limited on offensive function and difficult to take advantage to top-class attackers.

My english is not very good so i can't explain to you but believe me, nobody put Ribery in top 10 France history.

      Your arguments are not good.

For Tigana and Giresse, you talked to me about Ballon d'or, but Ribery appeared only one time on top 12 of ballon d'or in all career (Giresse 3 times)

Then you talked about injuries for Papin, but Papin played 6 full season in a row in Marseille (46 games average per year). He started to got injuries after left Marseille, he was already 30 years...
Like Ribery got injuries since 2014. Ribery has not a better longevity than Papin (first season at good level at 23 and injuries and decline at 30 for these two players).

      Delete
    5. Don't get me wrong. I refer to Ballon'Dor ranking for Giresse and Tigana because I'm not lived to watch them in the 1980s. For Ribery, I think Ballon'Dor too underrated him in 2008. Only domestic performance, I saw him as one of the best players in Europe in that season. He was fantastic, highly technical show and also productive.
Anyway, I have reviewed his rating in my system again. I found I’m slightly overrate him and have reduced his point. However, he still stay the same place. Why ? His international club is much better than the other French legends. He was a key player of the 3 times UFEA Champion League finalist.
Now look into Papin’s NT performance. It is undeniable that he was better than Ribery if only based on the opportunity of play but Papin participated too few in major international tournaments which is a main part of NT point. That’s why he is very disadvantageous. Tigana and Giresse are rated higher than RIbery in NT but int.club is much inferior to Ribery.
Now I rated Ribery down to 8th and I really cannot down him more at this current status of evidence.

Don't change anything at your work, i've already told you that it was amazing.
I brought you just a french point of view, where nobody serious would put Ribery in top 10, despite his good things with Bayern.
(But i'm ok with you about his ranking at 2008 ballon d'or, he deserved a better ranking, but i think he paid his bad UEFA Euro)

A thing i don't understand, you put Ribery behind Pires in "winger ranking", so i don't understand why you put Ribery so high in "all positional French ranking" (and much ahead of Pires)
Also when i see your winger ranking (all nationality), it's unbelievable for me to see Ribery ahead big player like Giggs, Johnstone, Rahn or Conti. For me, he can't claim a top 30.

Don't get me wrong. I find your rankings so relevant, that's why your opinion about Ribery surprised me so much.
I hope you understood my english.

And for the French positional ranking, he is really good. I think Georges Bereta, left winger of 70's, who played at Saint-Etienne (6 times french champion, 2 times French player of the year and gleaned 44 selections and lot of time as captain), can be included the top 10 of winger.
Also, maybe Hervé Revelli (striker of Saint-Etienne 70's) and Henri Michel (defensive midfielder of Nantes 70') deserve a mention. And the name of 14th center back is Andre LEROND, not Relond.

    1. It commonly needs change when the review for argument lead to different result. That is one of important parts of participants in the blog.

I forgot to update the winger list where you saw Pires ahead of Ribery(now have updated). Giggs never got to one of the best players of Europe status. He achieved world-class in few years but he did not influenced to the team as much as what Ribery made.

Thanks for the new names likes Bareta. He is really deserved mentioned (two times French player of the year). I rarely warch Henri Michel played but his skill is highly rated in this link http://pcsd.forumfree.it/?t=59308284 DO you have any support info to confirm his great status ? Herve Revelli is interesting. Saint Etienne did win any trophy during two years he moved to play for Nice. He won four league champions in row before move and when come back the club won three domestic league titles three times in row immediately. That is amazing !

In 1970's, Nantes was the only team who can contest Saint Etienne. Henri Michel won 3 championship (5 runners up) and played 532 games with Nantes in First Division, the holder recordman. He was also the Nantes's player most called in national team before Bossis.

At his time (70's), French national team was not very good. But it managed to qualify to 78 WC, where Henri Michel was indisputable. I think he's the best central midfielder of his time, ahead of Guillou and Larqué. To compare to a recent player, he's level was close to Emmanuel Petit.

For Revelli, it's true because Saint Etienne was champion with 2 really differents teams. The first, who win 4 titles in a row (67/68/69/70) with the goalkeeper Carnus, Yougoslav's defender Durkovic, Bosquier, midfielders Herbin and Jacquet (futur 98 winning world cup as coach), winger Bereta, the artist Mekhloufi and striker Salif Keita.
The second team who won 3 titles in a row (74/75/76) was composed by Yougoslav's goalkeeper Curkovic, argentine's defender Piazza, midfielder Bathenay-Larqué, and at the end the young Rocheteau.

As Bereta was forced to leave for money in winter 74, Hervé Revelli (not to be confused with Patrick Revelli, his young brother, also Saint Etienne's player, but less strong) was the only player who started in 1967-70 team and 1974-76 team.

Maryan Wisniewski is a famous french winger, think he could enter in positional ranking. Arman Penvern is int positional ranking twice as defensive midfield and center back, he seems to play midfield according to http://www.pari-et-gagne.com/joueur/armand_penverne.html. Then another player who could be in positional ranking is Eugène Maës.

    1. OK great suggestion. I think it is difficult to rate French player in the 1910s - 1920s. Its football standard is really lower standard so I'd not name Eugene Maes. Pernvern seems to be an important player for Reims' glory years. There is a few info to rate Wisniewski and he seems to be fail at Sampdoria.

Yes 'great' seasons, just like everyone else on that Juventus team.. these recent years the Italian league has been a one horse race. Juventus have had no competition, just like PSG in France for a long time. They outplayed all other teams in Serie A. They also failed to win CL even when dominating the Italian league for such a long time, against exactly like PSG. This shows that people overrate players on those two teams a lot. Do well domestically, but fail internationally.

Experts agree that he has been the worst player in the French squad so far, lots of articles about it if you google. There are two things he is world class at: dabbing and changing hair styles -_- Can I ask, Naratorn? Aren't you disappointed with him as well just like many other people?

    1. Pogba's role in this tournament just like destroyer, is very good in his defensive task. When France has no playmaker, Pogba is expected to contribute as a playmaker which he really fails. Fortunately, french forwards are too great.

    2. Anonymous15/7/18

      >destroyer role
xD? Maybe partially against Belgium, but otherwise laughable observation. Pogba is normal playmaker

OK :D Now I see that I cannot take you seriously Naratorn. Great job with cataloging on this site, but how little you have to really know about football to spout such nonsense. Pogba was magnificent in this world cup. I understand that some anon with weird "articles" talk writes that sillyness, but not such "historian"

      Delete
    3. France is always inferior to opponent in ball possession and when France win the ball, they tried to make deadly passing to the front line. Pogba is one of the key midfielders for this strategy. Although he is not a pure destroyer, he by far contributes defensive task than being creative force. There are seven matches that French player is chosen as man of the match but no Pogba so I don't think he is magnificent.

He could be deserved man of the match in final game but as I state his role in overall tournament is restricted mainly in defense.

Thuram played more as a central than as a lateral.
    Thuram/Dumas in Monaco
    Thuram/Cannavaro in Parma
    Thuram/Iuliano then Cannavaro in Juventus
He was mainly right back in national team.

  36. Pogba is definitely an overrating choice. I can't remember much of him at the WC'14 nor Euro'16. At the WC'18 he displayed some good defensive role but mostly because of his physical presence not because of football IQ. All of your reserved defensive midfielders are capable of replacing him. I suggest you wait a bit longer to put him into the final squad so we can see if he can achieve something more in the future.
Also I'm kinda curious if Griezmann deserves his entry. Of course he has contributed a lot for the national team (if that's the criteria you have set) but in terms of ability I believe he has a good overall but not one exceptional attribute. Also his national career began only 5 years ago while his club career has been out of France (not a important fact but it could affect his domestic reputation). I would consider his entry at the future as well. For the moment I would replace him with Djorkaeff.

    1. Hi, Your name is the same as former Greek basketball player ?

Look at reserved players for Pogba, Deschamps has a lot more consistency and longevity but honesty his style is too smooth as he was very slow, not prominent in any role of destroyer or playmaking. His technique and long pass is something normal as well. Makelele was less successful than Pogba internationally although he has greater in club level.

Djorkaeff was never rated as one of the best players in the World likes Griezmann and he also had a short prime period.

      Delete
    2. Anonymous19/10/21

Griezmann's quality as an all-round player is overstated by the media imo but he made the most of his talent and he had a better peak than Djorkaeff who was inconsistent. His contribution to France is greater than Djorkaeff too.

      Delete
  37. Hahaha yes! but we aren't relatives or something as far as I know.. I'm impressed that you know him.. unfortunately I don't have any serious interest in basketball and also didn't inherit much of his great basketball talent :P

Basically not to misjudge Pogba, he had some good moments at Wc14 and Euro16.. but I believe the key of the success was job of other midfielders, especially on defence.. so if you wanted a more offensive player in the squad I'm ok with it.. Pogba has proved his great technique but in terms of defence he is worse for sure.. I think he has been wasted on the position managers use him.. his greatest stint was with Juve as an attacker (that can justify his switch to no.10 in his last year ;)).. Anyway I would replace Pogba with a genuine defensive midfielder..
All in all I understand your explanation but in general (not only with France) concerning active players I would choose only those who have an undisputed national status..

Ok, Pogba was a candidated for FIFA Best XI, but in any moment he was regarded as the very best player in the world in his own position. His irregular carrer at Man United doesn't help him. Under Man United shirt, Fernandes showed more in 1 year than Pogba in 5 years!!

Kanté already achieved better peak (he was regarded two times as the best player of english league). He was also the best in the world in his position more times than Pogba and showed a frankly more regular carrer. I also see Kanté better than Makelele.

You should consider Dominique Bathenay. He should reach a rank between 10 and 15 in your defensive midfield list. He was a key player of the great St-Etienne in second half 70s, which is a main piece of history of french football. It's as important as the national team performance in France. By the way, he made one of the most iconic action of french football when he shot on crossbar in 1976 European Cup Final vs Bayern Munich. It probably does not seem important for a foreigner, but I assure you that everybody in France -I mean even people who don't like football- knows about it because it was a kind of trauma in France. Square bars of Glasgow are a major memory in french football, because it was the end of the only good performance for french football between Euro 1960 and World Cup 1982.

So Bathenay is definitely a big name in french football history. Much more than a lot of players on that page.

    By the way :
    Hugo Lioris -> Hugo Lloris
    Joclyn Angloma -> Jocelyn Angloma
    Franck Leboef -> Frank Leboeuf
    Didier Deschamp -> Didier Deschamps
    Emmanouel Petit -> Emmanuel Petit
    Cristian Karembeu -> Christian Karembeu

Yeah but that still doesn't change the fact that with the expactation he had and the wage he has, was expected to do more. He was only good in Juventus because it was an incredible bad league. Him and Dybala only did well because they had no competition in Serie A. Juventus kept winning everything year after year. Just like Ligue 1, farmer league performances should be taken with a grain of salt. Look how bad Pogba is performing once he has to face actual good opposition? He is utterly crap honestly, together with Dybala. They only do good on a good team against farmers.

Serie A only became competitive once again this year, it has been straight up farming by Juventus before now.

    3. Anonymous11/10/21

Sorry you can not compare a great player like Pogba to someone like Dybala who is a very good player but has got to be one of the most overrated players of all the time.

Pogba has also recently won the Nations League with France. The nations league is a secondary competition but it is still something.

A National team full of serie A players also won the European Championship recently btw and Serie A teams improved their performance in european competitions over the past five yeaes.

I agree with Pogba being a somewhat overrated player but so is De Bruyne recently.

As great of a player De Bruyne is he does not really make Manchester City tick, he is someone who is a game-changer but is not a player you can not do without in the course of a league run.

In fact he and Pogba are quite similar, the difference between them is that De Bruyne has reached a far higher peak and he is far smarter but they are both players you can without in the league.

I think that both Griezmann and Benzema have a case for being moved above Djorkaeff in the positional ranking for France considering their higher placement in the positional ranking list.

      Delete
    4. Anonymous18/10/21

They are all rated as being in prince gold class but De Bruyne is in the main hall of fame as an offensive midfielder while Pogba is in the substitution list for central midfielders and Griezmann is not even in the substitution list after the top 50 forwards. De Bruyne has also a very high peak performance state which i do not think Pogba or Griezmann have reached.
De Bruyne's issue is his longevity i believe.

If you are mentioning Pogba, Mbappe, Griezmann and Kante for France here then you should also mention Lahm, T. Muller, Ballack, Kroos and perhaps even one or two out of Ozil, Klose, Hummels and Schweinsteiger for Germany.

Kahn and Neuer are borderline all the time greats but both have had their fair share of blunders.

    T. Muller and Kroos were criticized by the media for their poor performances during the last Euros but Neuer was by far Germany's worst starter which is also corroborated by most rating apps like whoscored, fotmob and Sofascore.

I also think players like Thuram, Viera, Desailly, Trezeguet and others maybe deserve a mention here. To credit only superstars like Zidane is unfair when Zidane did not win as much with Real Madrid as he did with France and even he singled out the importance of unfashionable players like Makelele.

An objective top 40 ranking can be :
1.Platini/Zidane (all two were the n1 in the world for years)
    3.Kopa
    4.Henry and Benzema
6.Thuram, Vieira, Tigana, Giresse, Papin, Ribery
    12. Desailly, Blanc, Griezmann, Ben Barek, Fontaine, Piantoni
    18. Deschamps, Cantona, Tresor
    21.Amoros, Trezeguet
    23. Kante, Pogba, Makelele, Bossis, Pires, Rocheteau
    29.Djorkaeff, Jonquet, Ginola, Barthez
    33.Varane, Fernandez, Lizarazu, Giroud
    37.H.Michel, Anelka, Vincent, Marche

Then a lot of players are on the edge :
Bats, Lloris - Evra, Battiston, Bosquier - Petit, Penverne, Malouda - Wiltord, Lacombe, Cisowski

  75. Why griezmann and mbappe over cantona in this list and not in 9x100?

Because they have superior achievements for France but Cantona is regarded as a greater player.

  76. Benzema is better player than Griezmann, Papin, Fontaine, Henry and Cantona in my books. None of them on their primes performed ever on his 21/22 UCL level. Both technically and as a leader.

For Henry it's more than arguable, at his Prime Henry is a phenomen and a lot of people, including a lot of french people forgets it.

I agree with Benzema being better than Griezmann and Cantona, in my view he should have Queen Bronze class like Raul Gonzalez.

Matuidi retires from professional football. For me he was good enough to be mentioned here.

I think the positional table ranking must be updated (we cannot see anything in fact). Also, Varane, Giroud and Lloris definitely deserve to be mentioned

  80. Naratorn, your rankings appear as blank. We're missing them! Try to fix it when you have a moment, please.

I'd like to suggest Sebastien Frey for positional ranking. He was always overlooked by the National team, but was consistently one of the best Serie A goalkeepers throughout his career.

    1. OK, I understand only ranking for France is blank ? I have ironed it out. Frey was forgotten and as I checked, he is deserved to mention for sure.

Putting Griezmann and Benzema in the same positional category is extremely confusing and counterintuitive to the reader. Griezmann is and has always been a second striker who drops deep into midfield, while Benzema has always played as an out and out striker. Why are they both in the same category as forwards? This damages the credibility of your positional classifications; put Benzema as a striker; he's never played in any other position.

    -------------------Barthez
    Thuram Desailly Blanc Lizarazu (LWB)
    ---------Deschamps Vieira
    Kopa (RW) ----------------------Zidane (LPM)
    ---------Platini (DLF)
    --------------------Henry (FW)

Reserve team: Lloris, Amoros, Varane, Tresor Bossis, Kante, Tigana, Griezmann, Djorkaeff, M'Bappe, Benzema
