Spain National Team

The first Spain national football team was constituted in 1920, with the main objective of finding a team that would represent Spain at the Summer Olympics held in Belgium in that same year. During first half 1920s, Elo Rating shows Spain is the best team in the World 4 years. The group of stars comprise Jose Maria Balauste, Josep Samitier, Rafael Pichichi and Ricardo Zamora. Towards the 1st half 1930s that is the first era of professional football in Spain, Zamora still maintain his status as the best goalkeeper in the World with top-class players like Jacinto Quincoces, Luis Regueiro and Isidro Langara. The 2nd half saw Spanish Civil War and La Liga was suspended. In the post war-era, Barcelona established themselves dominating La Liga with its legends Antonio Ramallets, Joan Segarra, Estanislao Basora and the Hungarian who played for Spain national team during 1950s. The team won Latin Cup in 1949 and 1953 but not successful in 1953 Pequena Copa El Mundo.

At the inaugural European Cup through the 2nd half 1950s to Early 1960s, Real Madrid dominated European cup won five titles consecutively. The South american foreigners consist of Alfredo Di Stefano and Jose Santamaria were a main key player of both Real Madrid and Spain. Di Stefano as the best player in the World has the most appearances for Spain than other nations but he failed to lead Spain qualified for the 1958 World Cup and unfortunately he was injury in the 1962 final tournament. Spain won 1964 European nation cup under the stars Luis Suarez Miramontes to date is the only Spanish player to win Ballon'Dor and played alongside contemporary stars like Francesco Gento, Amancio Amaro and Luis De Sol. From mid-1960s to 1970s, Jose Pirri and Jose Angel Iribar were remarkable player when La Liga was at the era of declination and Spain did not qualify for World Cup and Euro over a decade. Spain in second half 1980s was formed and led by stars from "La Quinta" Real Madrid dominated La Liga like  Butagueno, Michel and Camacho. Real Madrid "Galacticos" with two top-class players Raul Gonzalez and Fernando Hierro were indispensable for Spain between late 1990s to early 2000s.

Spain finally met its golden era between late 2000s to early 2010s. The team was primarily formed based on Barcelona "Tiki Taka" led by Andreas Iniesta, Xavi Hernandez and David Villa. The team won three major international tournaments in row and won its only World Cup in history.

Formation XI (4-5-1)

Explanation of Formation

The team strategy is applied from the tiki-taka system with the five players in midfield line as a main control function. Ricardo Zamora is considered to be superior to Casillas in overall ability although Casillas' achievement with Spain is much higher. Puyol and Camacho are balanced full-back, would support the game at the side well. Hierro commands the back-line as a sweeper and would also support the creative force to the midfield line. Quincoces stands as a stopper with considerable technique. Pirri is responsible as a box-to-box midfielder, supporting the offensive game, would leave Xavi based on central midfield area to centralize in linkage of the ball possession of the team. Gento with his great speed on the left flank is a dangerous equipment. Amancio is assigned to support scoring task so he would act as a wing-forward. Luis Suarez is an offensive midfielder who would mainly create the decisive passing to Raul who is a withdrawn target-man in some occasion.

OK, firstly I'll start of by congratulating you on putting all this together. This history needs to be preserved for the future so that we can look back 10, 20 even 50 years from now and understand each new footballing landmark within its historical context, so well done!

As such, I think its crucial to get the fine details right, and though it might seem tedious, I simply cannot understand how you can make an all time Spanish XI without starting a single player from their greatest generation ever, and frankly, from one of the best sides ever to play the game. Xavi and Iniesta for me particularly deserve a place. In order to properly appreciate what Xavi really gave Spain, you need to remember that back in 2008, the Spanish national team were not expected to do well. As such, the quality of their football blew most teams away, with Xavi having the space to create with relative freedom. Things were different in 2010: teams were ready for Spain's passing game, and put 8, 9 or even 10 men in front of the ball. This tournament for me, was where Xavi's genius was most obvious. He was played in the position of a classic number 10, but actually behaved more like a deep lying playmaker, concentrating on keeping the ball, dictating the tempo, and assuring Spain retained control and did not get caught on the counter. Most people were concerned by how few goals Spain scored, but what should have been noted was how few they conceded, and Xavi in fact had more to do with this than anyone. In a tournament where, frankly, every team refused to allow them to play, Xavi's contribution is one of the most understated in football history. The more you watch of Xavi's football, both for Spain and Barcelona, the more you see how intelligent he is. Much of his work is actually done without the ball. He's never static, and is always moving to make himself an option when his team is attacking, or to block of the angle for a pass when defending. Few players have ever played this role as excellently or as consistently as Xavi.

A few words on Andres Iniesta. With Xavi playing this kind of role, Iniesta is often asked to do even more creating than he normally would, and often from out wide! He does this brilliantly for Barcelona, and its no coincidence that the gap between Barcelona's 2009 and 2011 champions league triumphs came when Iniesta was out of the picture.

Now compare this to the players you have ahead of him, both in your rankings and in your first XI. Estanislao Basora, Raul, and Paco Gento were all great players, but none of them were the linchpins of their club or international sides, or defined the teams they played in to the extent that Xavi did. Rather, they decorated teams, providing attacking flair, but nothing truly indespensible. For that matter, your decision to go with 4-4-2 doesn't even make sense, as it leaves the side wide open and incredibly vulnerable in midfield, as neither of your strikers are the type to instinctively come deep.

If you'll permit me, this would by my proposition. Replace Raul (yes really) and Basora with Xavi and Iniesta. Change your 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3, with Xavi partnering Suarez and Pirri, while Iniesta goes to the right, where he can drift inside and create the way he has done for a great deal of his career. He is positionally versatile, so I don't think playing him on the right is a problem. Now you have a side that is infinitely more balanced, and more importantly, better represents the true greatness of Spanish football. For good measure, I would also knock Xavi's class up to (at least) King Bronze, given the influence he had on the way football was played in his era. On that note, he certainly deserves to move ahead of Paco Gento on your all time Spanish list, and arguably Suarez as well, although that's a much closer call. I think he should also move ahead on your positional rankings for central midfielders, as none of Ocwirk, Brietner, Monti, Andrade or Masopust combined ability with success to the extent Xavi did.

    1. Your description of Xavi’s playing characteristic is really an impressive representative but it is slight more than my watch on his footage. The Spanish dominance side was centralized in midfield area led by Xavi and the tactic strategy fulfilled Xavi’s potential skill conduct to his great performance. His individual style of playing is nevertheless seen to be limited functionally when he was just based on central midfield area, not capable to support scoring enough as midfield had should made within its supporting duty. His defensive quality is also rather limited for central midfielder position. That makes a conclusion that he was superb in specific tactic but his individual ability is not considered among the best ever. When All-Time XI was made, the selection is primarily based on players’ ability but need to make equivalent of the formation as well.

For your suggestion to adjust the formation, I think it would be more 4-5-1 than 4-3-3 since Iniesta and Gento are a pure midfielder and I think effectiveness of Iniesta should be reduced unnecessarily if he was moved to the right-side, is also not a great supporter of scoring for position in the front-line. In case Xavi would be selected to play alongside Luis Suarez in midfield area (Suarez could play as inside-forward), the Spanish right-winger should be either of Basora or Amancio. The format 4-5-1 could be as equivalent as 4-4-2 as long as there is a support striker behind Zarra and both wingers could perform as wing-forward role but I see Gento is seldom a wing-forward and Luis Suarez is also not a natural support striker.

Spain are stronger with more midfielders on the pitch, so a 4-5-1 should suit them. Iniesta played most of his career for Spain from either the right or the left, so moving him there hardly reduces his effectiveness. More to the point, it is unrealistic to suggest Spain wouldn't score enough goals without 2 strikers; they won Euro 2012 by four goals without even one striker on the pitch:

It is, frankly, a misrepresentation to have an all time Spanish XI without including Xavi. He is the most influential player in the history of Spanish football, and the most important player in their best ever team. To have someone like Basora in ahead of him, or even Telmo Zarra, both of whom contributed comparatively little to the international team, is to misrepresent Spanish football. I still argue that a 4-5-1 actually makes Spain stronger than a 4-4-2, but if you're that concerned about the lack of goal scorers in the team, then move Raul to the right and play him as a wide forward, who can drift inside or make runs in behind. But please put Xavi in the first XI, his absence is embarrassing.

    3. OK, It would be fine to include Xavi by pushing L.Suarez to more advanced role and remove Zarra. It is still to difficult to find the room for Iniesta. I also replace Basora by Amancio based on application of the systematic scorecard in PHF. Please see the revised information as above.

  2. If Iniesta and Xavi are 3 and 4 placed as major players, because they are not in the starting lineup up?

    1. Xavi and Iniesta is not named in formation XI even they are ranked as the 3rd and 4th bet Spanish players because of tactical awareness. Xavi and Luis Suarez Miramontes is considered as an incompatible pair if they played together due to the same role of playing. Has Gento on the left-wing, no space for Iniesta who is a semi-left midfielder.

      Delete
    2. The Iniesta is a versatile player, could be compatible if used in another position, I think this team is very offensive, he could enter the place of Estanislao Basora, would help the Pirri marking. (Google translate - I am Brazilian)

      Delete
    3. Iniesta is not a natural right-side midfielder player. He would be most fit to 4-51 formation if selected as a starter alongside Pirri and L.Surez in midfield area but if leave either of Zarra or Raul alone in the front line, the support of scoring from midfield area is too limited when Gento, Iniesta and Luis Suarez all are not a specialist for this scoring task.

      Delete
    4. In my opinion, your team is good in defense, but there is imbalance between the midfield and the attack, four strikers is very and two half fields is little, I put a midfield in place of Basra, otherwise will be undermined in midfield . Is Google traslate may be errors.

Great work , but I am astonished abour Raul's ranking. Raul is considered as the geratest spanish player of all time and also amonst the very best ever in Real Madrid history. Even Guardiola who is a Barca related figure(1,2 and 4 are barca players) said that he is the best player of all time in Spanish football. And may I say Guadriola is an exceptional football expert.

Luís Figo (11/06/05): "I think he is the greatest player to have ever played the game. He walks on the turf and astounds. It is utterly amazing"

Alex Ferguson 2003 "Real buy these big players like Figo, Zidane and Ronaldo but I think the best player in the world is Raúl"

Raul is certainly no.1 , and why isn't Casillas above Zamora yet?

    1. Raul was declined too early between 2003 and 2007 when he was much less productive in scoring and assisting although he could return to meet the twice great seasons. In comparison to other legends, Luis Suarez Miramontes is definitely the best Spanish player ever, he was one of the best players in Europe five years. Gento, Iniesta and Xavi are clearly more consistent and greater impact to his club than Raul who was overshadowed by a number of superstars. Anyway the list is not updated. Now Raul is at least ahead of Telmo Zarra. I'll update tomorrow.

Casillas is one of the most team decorated players ever but not mean he is the best Spanish keeper ever automatically. His overall ability is obviously inferior to the group of the biggest talented keepers ever "includes Zamora"

I hope you are not including those marginal years because in 2003 Raul was finished 3rd World Soccer Player of the Year and in 2007 he was again Nominated for Ballon d'Or. Also it's not really a big deal he had a deep in form 3 seasons considering he was still nominated for Ballon d'Or in 2005. In conclusion Xavi and Iniesta are in no way more consistent players than Raul. Xavi playing better in older age may be misleading , but Raul started being a star from very early age(was nominated first time in the same year with Zidane, even ahead). Until 28 years , Xavi was not even close to being called a World Class player and only after being perfectly suited in a Tiki-Taka system combining with players he binded in years and years like Iniesta and Messi(and some others if you may) and also in the NT he was boosted via team chemestry with the same core of players like Iniesta and Buquets later. So Iniesta fals similary in the same category IMO. As individual players , in no way are Xavi and Iniesta above Raul. Even Guardiola whom Iniesta is his favourite players stated clearly who is Spain's greatest of all time. Also add that Raul's lack in international tropyes can be pardoned as he did not have a generation like the one that folowed after him.Even so he was the all-time top scorer of the NT.

And about Casillas , even if Zamora is to be considered more talented than Casillas according to claims from the past , Casillas' dominance is unpreceded in football history(bar Yashin). He was aknowledged by media as the best goalkeeper on the planet in 6 consecutive years(not to mention he was many times amongst the very best even not counting those 6 years). I think that alone should put him in the elite class and above Zamora.

    1. Yes, Raul’s big decline started at the 2003 – 2004 season. Xavi and Iniesta is mentioned to have the more sustainable performance because their declined years are better than that of Raul. I’d always prefer not to refer Ballon’Dor ranking as it is inaccurate in some points, but when you cited Raul’s 2005 Ballon’dor nomination, I think Xavi is clearly better than Raul in all-time Ballon’Dor ranking. Look at international country tournaments, Xavi is the best player in 2008 Euro and Iniesta is the best player in the 2012 Euro and best midfielder in the 2010 world cup. Raul scored only 1 goal in 4 games of the 2000 Euro, no goal in the 2004 tournament, 1 goal in 4 games of the 2006 World Cup. He achieved his best tournament in the 2002 world cup but Spain was beaten in round of 16.

Casillas is prolifically the best keeper in the world in easier jobs than many in previous eras, thanks the world not to send the equal candidate in the same era and what if he was born in the similar circumstance of the 1970s (Zoff, Maier, Filol, etc) or the 1980s (Dasaev, Schumaccher, Zenga, etc). Casillas is a reliable world-class keeper but his position, jumping and reflexed saves are no distinguish from many other great legends. Zamora is more than a world-class keeper and the Pre-war history of football recognized him as a phenomena.

I saw that yourself mention Ballon d'Or rankings in your works so that is why I meantioned them. But I agree they don't tell the whole story. Xavi and Iniesta may have been a bit overrated due to their team's constant succes , but it's obvious Raul had for tougher competition in his years. And Iniesta was no way best mdf in 2010 WC , it was Sneijder.
Again , Raul's lack of international trophyes is not only his fault , it was a generation as good as the Golden Era. And you meantioned Suarez's dominance.. Raul was aswell one of the best players in Europe five years. He was in 1999 , in 2000 , in 2001 , 2002 and 2003.

Also I may say that Casillas did confront tough competition. Van der Sar , Cech , Khan(in 2002 Iker would have been no doubt no.1 if not for a WC Year to boost Khan) , Neuer , Buffon.

      Delete
    3. For me, Iniesta might not be inferior to Sneijder in the 2010 World Cup but the fact that Sneijder’s role was not a pure midfielder as he was assigned in advanced role just behind the target man so I just mention Iniesta is the best midfielder by this condition. In the first round, Sneijder was named twice man of the match while Iniesta was named once. In the knock-out round, Sneijder was named man of the match in quarter-final and semi-final while Iniesta is also named in quarter-final and he is man of the match in the final.
I’m not specific in requiring Raul’s trophy but he even scored few goals in his opportune extent.
Anyway, I’m implementing the methodology in positional hall of fame and when finished (around next 3 -4 month, I’ll show the scorecard with re-arrange some rankings and then we would discuss again.

I'm awaiting to see the result but you don't need a score card to be sure that Raul was clearly better than 5. Ricardo Zamora
    6. Iker Casillas
    7.Jose Pirri
Any knowledgeble Real Madrid fan will be astonished to see otherwise , trust me!

  6. I'm from Spain and I tend to think like Naratorn.

I was a big fan of the Galacticos and while Raul achievements at club level make him one of the best Spanish players of all time, his performance with the national team was mostly disappointing. Most people I know places Xavi, Iniesta and Casillas above him for the simple fact that they gave us a World Cup and two European Championships, as well as collaborating in achieving several Champions League.

And I think people underestimate Xavi too much for that is an associative player, after all, football is an associative game and this little guy is the mastermind behind the style of play that changed the history of Spanish football.

This is my All-Time Spain Starting Eleven:

    -------------- Raúl---------------Zarra---------------

    Gento------------------------------------------Iniesta

    -------------L. Suarez--------Xavi--------------------

    5. I think it is not easy to find balance solution. If I includes all of these 3 midfielders plus DM. That means there are already 4 midfielders in central line. The most possible way is to remove Gento and put Iniesta as a left-side midfielder but it is not his best position and Gento is clearly better on the wing.

  17. I'm Spanish and I want to notify some mispelling and common nicks and popular names for a few players. #10 Luis Suarez Moramontes should be Luis Suarez Miramontes, #11 Francisco Gento is known by everyone as Paco Gento. Defensive midfielder #1 Joseph Guardiola should be Josep Guardiola but everyone know him as Pep Guardiola. Ofensive lateral #1 Michel Gonzalez is known just as Michel. Finally, ofensive lateral #3 Augustin Gainza should be Agustin Gainza.

    -----------------------L. Suarez-----------------------------
    -----------------Iniesta--------Xavi-------------------------

    ----Camacho-------Pirri-----------Hierro----------Puyol/Segarra

    -------------------------Zamora------------------------

In this formation, Luis Suárez is an offensive midfielder, Iniesta and Xavi are central midfielders, Hierro is a stopper and Pirri is a sweeper (because both played many times in that positions in their careers) and the right full back is Puyol(who played as a right back in Barcelona) or Segarra.

  24. Hi Naratorn.

I feel like David Silva is dramatically underrated both here and on your positional ranking list. He was constantly amazing both as a side midfielder in his early days and now as an offensive playmaker who can play almost anywhere on the pitch.
He has literally a STELLAR ranking on DBSCalcio (only one season lower than 6.30 in his whole carreer) and his trophies and contribution to the team in club and especially in the national team are impressive (key player of Spain).
I feel he doesn't get the credit he deserves because he never scored much, but his touch, intelligence, vision and passes are stunning.

I think he should be battling with Amancio for the 10th spot amongst Spanish players, Queen Bronze / Silver rated and on the reserve squad, not Prince Silver and 55th in all time offensive lateral list. Can you please explain how you rate him? I'm willing to learn about your point of view :)

And about Segarra, if you use the same criteria that you explain in Netherlands Team, Sergio Ramos has to be in (is qualified by his accurate passing and considerably technical ability). His total performance and peak are higher and he played a lot as a right back (both have the same defence but I see that Ramos is a little better in attack).

The greatest spanish player ever is Xavi, both in peak and generally. Despite all that followed him, how his borderline effectiveness impacted football, he's still underrated. What you write about him a few comments earlier is just laughable. He didn't contribute defensively and didn't help with scoring? Do you even undestand how football works and that it wasn't his function to do score or tackle?

"he was superb in specific tactic but his individual ability is not considered among the best ever" - Considered? By whom? This is just pure nonsense. He didn't just "fit the system". He is the system. The guy is literally close to PERFECTION in his specific role. It doesn't mean he is limited - he just knew what to do on the pitch to be genuinely meaniningfull, not doing unnecesary pirouettes like Zidane.

Greatest central midfielder in history of the game, mastermind behind arguably the best national team in history and the best club side in history too (Barca 2008-2011 at least). Robbed of 2009 Ballon d'or, when Messi wasn't as good yet. How is player like that not even in your 50 greatest players ever?

Kinda related issue is also how you underrate Modrić - Lewandowski in top 3 of 2017, when Modrić dominates the season with Ronaldo? Why? Because he doesn't have many assists and goals? Jesus Christ, give me a break

He has done jackshit with United, won almost nothing in his career so far. Busquets is more consistent and has a cabinet full of trophies. That team has been consistently shit for many years in a rov now, despite spending a ton of money.

  31. What about Juan Carlos Valerón? He doesn't appear even mentioned here but he had a great career at Mallorca and Atletico Madrid and is a Deportivo Golden Era legend on the same level as Bebeto, Djalminha, Roy Makaay, Mauro Silva and Fran; also he's regarded as one of the most talented and ellegant playmakers/attacking midfielders in Spanish football history. I could only watched him play live once in 2011 when he was 36, had recovered from a huge knee injury and Deportivo was playing in 2ND division, and trust me that was one of the greatest individual performances I've ever seen in a football pitch.

Also Fran could be here as reserve Offensive Lateral. He was a one club man and played for Deportivo for almost 20 years, the only player that was part of the roster in all title achievements and the 2004 Champions League Semi-finals. Also Fran is regarded as one of the greatest left-footed Spanish players of all time and the best Galician player after, ovbiously, Luis Suárez and Amancio Amaro.

  39. Good work, just some appreciations. Some players from the golden generation are clearly underrated. Piqué and Busquets prince silver, really? Two key players for the two strongest sides of this century. Pretty unfair to them. And the same can I say about David Silva, greatest PL player of this past decade and crucial for Spain. Also I miss Juan Carlos Valerón, widely considered the best Spanish player alongside Raúl from 98 to 2008. And the best UD Las Palmas player of all time, Germán Dévora, the classic 10, one of the best Spanish players from late 60's and the 70's, true legend

Valeron is my fondness but his seasonal rating in dbscalcio is too low. His career was also impacted by injury.

      Delete
    2. I have to disagree with you there. Good attack wins you games, good defence wins you championships. And Piqué and Busquets know what it is to dominate the Spanish League (8 leagues in 11 seasons), the strongest league in the world this past decade. I really can't get how you could rate Mascherano Prince Gold and Busquets and Piqué Prince Silver. Mascherano first season with Barça could hardly get some minor games because of the presence of Busquets, he had to drop back to CB so he could get more minutes. And then the following seasons Mascherano wasn't even half as vital as Piqué was in the defence. No defensive midfielder has come close to Busquets over this decade. Piqué has also been the most dominant CB this past decade alongside Ramos, with Godín really close to both. And I know what I'm talking about because I follow La Liga weekly since 2006

      Delete
    3. I had some arguments regarding Pique. He was one of the most decorative defenders but I give more significant factor to his ability. His defensive skill is surely not among top 100 but he compensates by some of his technique and offensive skill. He never appear in top 15 best players in the World. I think the competitiveness of defender in recent eras are weaker than the past. Had he played in 1980s to 1990s, he would not be considered one of the best defenders in the World.

Busquets is narrower classified in Prince Gold but I don't think he was never started in Wolrd XI in any year.

      Delete
  40. If you look in the UEFA team of the year from 2009 to today, you'll find there is only one year (2018) in which they have put a defensive midfielder (Kanté). This position is often overlooked when doing team of the year, they just put offensive mids because they are more "spectacular". Busquets plays in a position where it is more difficult to shine, but it is obvious he is the best defensive mid since Redondo.
And about Piqué, "his defensive skill is surely not among top 100", do you even watch Barça play? They take more risks than any team in the world, their playstyle exposes CB's the most. CB's at Barça need certain abilities more than just tackle and aggressiveness, you know players are not just skill, context matters too. Nevertheless you are underretaing Piqué's defensive skills; his composure, positioning, aerial game, short and long passes, leadership and understanding of the game are world class, yet you have classified him below Thiago Silva. It's literally embarrasing to put Thiago Silva ahead of Piqué, he's not even on Pepe's, Hummels or Chiellini's level, let alone naming him in the same sentence as Piqué. Take a look at the UCL knockouts PSG has lost since Thiago plays for them, he's never been able to compete with the best teams in the world and Ligue One is a joke. The most overrated CB of his generation honestly.
You talk about the competitiveness of defenders in recent eras being weaker than the past, that could be true in a way, but youy are forgetting defenders today have to develop more registers to compete at the top level. Back in the day, defenders main purpose was being solid, win duels, have decent passing and that's it. Currently defenders have to be more complete, not only CB's but full backs too, football is permamently changing and nowadays defenders have to be much better on the ball, because almost every big team wants to dominate the game to win. And for example one player you have Queen rated is Koeman, who was an absolute beast, but my dad for example, who has been following Barça since the 60's and watched Koeman during his prime says Piqué is slightly better than him.
In conclussion, I think Piqué and Ramos should be Queen rated since they have been the most dominant CB's of their generation and future defenders will look at them as the example to follow. Puyol and Busquets deserve that rating too btw

    Replies
    1. Piqué is nowhere near what you make of him, I fear. He has an astounding lack of concentration throughout many matches, is often too rushy and has alternated excellent seasons and games to subpar ones. Even his positioning can be debatable. I believe this is what Naratorn meant with "his skill is not among top 100". You can even find quite easily some compilations of Pique's many sloppy mistakes in Youtube.

Then again, he compensates with leadership, calmness on the ball, passing skills, offensive skills and fearful aerial presence. On his day, he can be a great marker too, but there are the problems mentioned above.

I have been able to follow Thiago Silva from Milan and what you are saying is nonsense. Surely, he lacks the international success that Pique had, but he lacked also a team like Pique has had. Defensively, he is always firm and steady and doesn't have blackouts such as Pique's with that frequency. He lacks the leadership, sure, but that's not the point of this discussion.

I don't know why the spaniards tend to overrate their defenders so much, even at the last World Cup the commentators were praising every move of Piqué and Ramos, and they offered some dreadful defending against Portugal and Morocco.

In conclusion, both Piqué and Ramos deserve to be in the top 100 for what they have achieved, their leadership and quality, but surely not as high (both of them) in my opinion, as you think they should be.

Another example is the Italian Costacurta: classy defender, good on the ball, good marker, has incredible achievements at team level, but made many mistakes and had lack of concentration. Deserves a spot, but cannot be named amongs the finest defenders ever.

He has always had fame of be a silly man (for some incoherent quotes he said in interviews and that) and a dirty player and in many times a silly player too, like when he forced the yellow card against Ajax and then the Dutchs eliminated us of the UCL without Sergio and this kind of things, also a lot of his red cards come from unnecesary tough fouls. When he's on fire he's an extraordinary defender and talented player, but he's extremely irregular during the season. Puyol in the other hand is clearly less talented, he didn't take free kicks or scored a lot of goals but he was a pure defender and a player who always performed over the limits and despite he was tough he was very clean too, as he wasn't sent off more than once or twice in his career. Ramos is great and he gave me a lot of happyness with his key goals for Real but Puyol was much better.
